WEF2020 – Opening statement by Klaus Schwab. -Davos Manifesto in World Economic Forum 2020
In Its 50th WEF Year, Davos Is Searching for Its Soul. Critics say the gathering of elites is out of touch. But the World Economic Forum’s founder, Klaus Schwab, is still making the case that the annual event in Switzerland makes a difference. #WEF #WEF2020 #WEF50 #WEF20 #Davos #Davos20 #DAVOS2020 #EUatDavos
Klaus Martin Schwab is a German engineer and economist best known as the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum. His wife and former secretary, Hilde, co-founded the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship with him. He was born in 1938, in Ravensburg, Germany.
A new #DavosManifesto
To coincide with its 50th anniversary, the World Economic Forum launched a new Davos Manifesto.
This is a set of ethical principles to guide companies in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The World Economic Forum, based in Cologny-Geneva, Switzerland, is an NGO, founded in 1971. The WEF's mission is cited as "committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas".
I am convinced that a more just and sustainable economic system is possible. For too long, humanity took away resources from the environment and in exchange produced waste and pollution. I believe we can reconcile our economy with our planet, human development with the protection of our home. But we can only do it together," said von der Leyen.
"Davos is the place where people who wouldn't even speak engage with one another," she added.
Two proudest achievements
Professor Klaus Schwab officially opened the Annual Meeting 2020 with a welcome message to all those in the building.
"We are celebrating our 50th anniversary, and you can imagine people ask me, what are you most proud of? There are two things. First, when I looked for my first employee I met my wife. But I'm most proud of the community which we built."
He paid tribute to the young leaders in the room - Young Global Leaders and Global Shapers - who still believe in the interdependence of our world and are ready to work together.
In 1970, Professor Schwab wrote a book on stakeholder theory, disagreeing with Milton Friedman's notion that "the business of business is business."
